AI Training Roles

Is micro1 legit?

Yes, micro1 is a real, venture-funded company that hires contractors to train and evaluate AI models, and it has been covered by TechCrunch, Forbes and Reuters. Being legit does not mean every candidate gets work: passing the AI interview is not a job offer, and scammers do use the micro1 name.

What micro1 is

On its home page, micro1 calls itself a data lab to train frontier models and evaluate agents. Its expert page says it connects domain experts with projects that help build and improve AI systems. In practice, it recruits professionals (lawyers, doctors, engineers, scientists, writers, generalists and others) and places them on AI training projects for its clients.

  • Founder and CEO: Ali Ansari, according to TechCrunch and micro1's own newsroom.
  • Funding: TechCrunch reported in September 2025 a $35 million Series A at a $500 million valuation, led by 01 Advisors, the firm of former Twitter executives Dick Costolo and Adam Bain.
  • Size: TechCrunch reported in August 2026, citing a source, that micro1's gross annual run rate had reached $500 million. It also said micro1 started as an AI recruiting startup and moved into data labeling.
  • Later rounds: some outlets report a newer round at a much higher valuation. TechCrunch called this unconfirmed, so this guide does not repeat a figure.

None of this says anything about your own chances or pay. It only answers the first question: the company exists, has investors and is widely reported on.

How hiring works

micro1's expert page lays out the path in a few steps:

  1. Apply to an open role on its jobs portal.
  2. Take the AI interview. The interviewer is an AI recruiter called Zara. The interview is recorded, and the candidate terms say candidates consent to the recording of answers, audio and video.
  3. Get onboarded. The page says human recruiters review profiles and match experts with relevant opportunities, and that selected experts receive an email with next steps and onboarding details. It also says this "does not guarantee immediate placement on a project".
  4. Start earning, once placed on a project, at the rate micro1 lists for it.

The candidate terms also state that micro1 makes no guarantee that an interview will lead to an offer. Plan for that: apply to the roles that fit you best, and do not count on income from one interview. If you want to prepare, see the micro1 AI interview guide, and the guide on what happens after the interview for what usually comes next.

micro1 also lists countries and regions where it cannot hire people (among them Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, China, Iran and Venezuela). Check that list on its expert page before you spend time on an application.

How to tell real micro1 contact from a scam

Job scams that borrow the names of real companies are common. These checks are the most useful:

  • Check the email domain. micro1's expert page says official emails come from @micro1.ai, @micro1.io or @micro1.co. Look closely for lookalikes with extra letters, hyphens or other endings. Gmail, Outlook or other free addresses are a warning sign.
  • Never pay. micro1's pages do not mention any fee for experts, and its practice interview page calls practice "100% free". The US Federal Trade Commission is blunt: do not pay for the promise of a job, and walk away from anyone who wants an upfront fee for training, starter kits or certifications.
  • Never share codes or passwords. No genuine recruiter needs your one-time login codes, your account password or your bank login. Banks such as Caixa Geral de Depósitos advise never giving personal or bank details in reply to an easy-money job ad.
  • Be wary of checks and transfers. The FTC warns about fake checks where you are told to send part of the money back. A real employer will not ask you to move money for them.
  • Be wary of chat apps. An unsolicited message on WhatsApp or Telegram offering simple tasks (liking videos, rating products) for fast pay is a common scam pattern, not an AI training role.
  • Start from the source. If in doubt, ignore the link in the message, go to micro1.ai yourself and log in there. Questions can go to support@micro1.ai, the address listed on micro1's site. If you already shared bank details, contact your bank and the authorities right away.

What candidates report

Reviews are individual opinions and are not fact-checked, so treat them as signals, not proof.

The good

On Trustpilot, micro1 had a TrustScore of 4.7 from more than 10,000 reviews when checked, with most reviews at five stars. Reviewers often praise a smooth application, a clear AI interviewer and quick communication from recruiters. A third-party analysis of public Reddit threads (by annotation.academy, a site that sells its own AI training certification) found more accounts of on-time payment than of payment problems.

The bad

The one-star reviews on Trustpilot repeat a few themes:

  • AI interview questions that felt unrelated to the role, or abrupt interruptions.
  • Generic rejections, or "shortlisted" messages that did not turn into a project.
  • Slow or missing replies from support.
  • Problems with ID checks or onboarding.
  • Concerns about unpaid tasks and about how interview recordings are used.

Trustpilot also showed that micro1 had not replied to negative reviews. The Reddit analysis found similar complaints. The most repeated ones were the wait after the interview (often ending in "Not Selected"), projects that pause or end soon after starting, and some roles listed as hourly that turned out to be paid per task.

Red flags worth taking seriously

  • Recordings and data. Under the candidate terms, candidates assign micro1 their rights in interview results, which include video, and micro1 may use them to improve its products. Read the terms before you record.
  • Unpaid work. Some reviewers report unpaid tasks or unpaid preparation before any paid project. Ask in writing whether a task is paid before you start a large one.
  • No guarantee of hours. Projects start and end with client demand. Rates are listed by micro1 for each role, and micro1 makes every hiring and pay decision. For context on rates, see the guide to micro1 pay rates.

Bottom line

micro1 is a real company with real roles, and many candidates report a good experience. The risks are uncertain placement, silence after interviews, and fake recruiters using its name. Apply through the official site, check every email domain, and never pay anything.
